Surprised that this blog is still alive! Plan to reboot in 2016. Lots of things have happened, most importantly, we have a new mouth to feed, so I'm all about fast, tasty, and kid friendly recipes.

what's wrong with what we eat?

Mark Bittman on what's wrong with what we eat | Video on TED.com

I consider this 20 minute talk to be the essence of my food philosophy: we need to be responsible about the sources and contents of our diets and remain conscious of the daily choices we make. Simple changes, like "Meatless Mondays" and opting out of purchasing processed, prepackaged foods will have a substantive effect on not only the environment, but one's well-being.

Simple things that I do:
  • Choose to purchase meat, fish, poultry, and eggs from producers who are conscious of animal welfare and do not practice industrial food farming. Whole Foods makes this easy with their animal welfare rating system. I avoid industrial brands such as Tyson, Smithfield, Conagra, etc.
  • Learned to cook so I dont have to rely on packaged and processed food products. If cooking is a daunting process, Mark Bittman's recipes are minimalist in approach, wholesome, and are easy to master.
  • Choose 1 day of the week when you don't eat meat, fish, chicken, milk, or eggs (as in meatless mondays.)
  • Choose locally made/gown products when given the opportunity.
